El Lapislázuli fue una de las mercancías más precosas del mundo antguo, e incluso tenía valuación en un nivel igual al del oro, también se usaba de medicamentos, cosméticos y pintura.
Se trata de una roca compuesta por los minerales lazurita (azul), pirita(amarilla) y calcita (blanca).
Los puntos y manchas de pirita en el lapislázuli son muy apreciados y se trata de un fuerte indicio de su autenticidad.
Hay yacimientos en buena cantidad en los Andes Chilenos y normalmente el Lapislázuli es lapidado en forma de cabochones o pulido en distintos formatos planos.
Los tallados hechos de bloques sólidos de la roca suelen ser bastante costosos.

Lapis Lazuli was one of the most precious commodities during ancient times and was considered to be as valuable as gold.
I was used in medicine, cosmetics and paintings. lapis Lazuli is actually a rock, consisting of various minerals, particulary hauynite, sodalite, noselite and lazurite, to which the stone owes its blue color. Pyrite (yellow) and calcite (white) are also generally present. The bright brassy-gold specks of pyrites are much appreciated, as they indicate the autenticity of the stone.
Lapis Lazuli can be found in large quantities in Chilean Andes and it is usually cut in the form of a cabochon or polished in flat slabs in various formats. Carvings made of large solid blocks are very expensive.
